Cookie policy

You choose what this site remembers.

This policy explains the cookies and browser storage we use, what they do, and how you can change your choices.

What we mean by cookies

Cookies are small files saved by a website in your browser. We also use local and session storage, which work in a similar way. In this policy, “cookies” covers all of these technologies.

Essential settings

Some storage is needed to remember your cookie choice, keep settings during the current visit and secure reader or newsroom sign-in when you request it. These settings are active because the feature you asked for cannot work reliably without them.

Reader sign-in and the app

When you request reader sign-in on the website, essential cookies keep the session secure. Access expires with the current session token; renewal and request-protection cookies may last up to 30 days. Temporary email-code and social sign-in cookies expire after ten minutes. These cookies are restricted to the reader account service, are inaccessible to page scripts and are removed when you sign out through that service.

Apple or Google may use its own cookies during a sign-in you choose; its own policy applies. The native reader app uses secure device storage for account credentials and pending deletion receipts rather than website cookies. Guest saves stay in local app storage. Signed-in saved-story references sync with your account; the separate protected device cache and pending save changes are cleared when you sign out. Account settings and following choices stored by the service remain until changed or the account is deleted; turning off optional browser preferences does not delete them.

Optional reading preferences

If you allow reading preferences, we remember your chosen language and text size between visits. If you turn this off, those choices continue only for the current tab and the saved copy is removed.

Optional article analytics

If you allow article analytics, we measure which article was viewed, active reading time, reading progress and whether the visit lasted long enough to count as a view. This helps the newsroom understand which stories readers use and improve the newspaper.

Article analytics do not include your name, email address, search terms, precise location or the full address of the page. They do not create a personal reading profile or identify you across different visits.

Optional website analytics

If you allow website analytics, Vercel Web Analytics counts visits to public pages and shows aggregate traffic by grouped page path, referring page or site, approximate location, browser, operating system and device type. It uses a short-lived visitor identifier that resets daily, without a visitor cookie.

We remove search text, query strings, fragments and story IDs from the page address we report; a referring page may have its own address. Private newsroom pages are excluded. Your earlier article-analytics choice does not automatically enable website analytics; this is a separate decision that you can change below.

Optional performance analytics

If you allow performance analytics, Vercel Speed Insights measures public website loading, visual stability and interaction timing, known as Web Vitals. Reports include grouped page addresses, browser, operating system, device type, network speed and country, and may identify the page element involved in a timing measurement.

It adds no personal reader identifier. We remove search text, query strings, fragments and story IDs from reported page addresses. Private newsroom pages and the native app are excluded. Earlier article or website analytics choices do not enable this new purpose; it stays off until you explicitly choose it below.

Maps and other websites

Opening a website map requests the tiles needed to display that area from OpenStreetMap. The iOS app uses Apple MapKit; the Android app uses MapLibre with OpenFreeMap tiles based on OpenStreetMap. Sharing your location is a separate browser or device permission and is never enabled by accepting cookies. Cloudflare delivers edition reading copies independently of optional analytics choices. Links to social media, student services and other websites open those organisations’ services, where their own cookie policies apply.

Changing your choice

Use the controls on this page whenever you want to change a setting. Changes apply immediately. Turning an analytics setting off stops its new measurements; turning article analytics off also clears its unsent measurements. Clearing this site’s browser data removes your saved choice, and optional settings stay off until you choose again.
