To quote the first ever Gair Rhydd published in 1972, “perhaps we’d better explain”. Gair Rhydd, ‘Free Word’ in Welsh, is your student newspaper.

We are here to amplify your voice, your concerns, your University. Whether our original news and investigative work, our University sports coverage, culture work, or anything in between, there is something for every Cardiff student in the pages of Gair Rhydd.

In short, if it matters to you, Gair Rhydd reports it. We exist because you pay outrageous rent for a mouldy house in Cathays to come to repeatedly rescheduled lectures, and someone should be asking why.

Since 1972, Gair Rhydd’s student journalism has held the University, Students’ Union, and other students, to account, as well as put the spotlight on the areas of student life that deserve it, and this year is no different.

Regular readers will have noticed that we have a brand new website this year, and, with this first edition, have officially launched Llais Rhydd. Piloted last year, Llais Rhydd (‘Free Voice’) is Gair Rhydd’s podcast - available on Spotify.

Astute readers will also notice the new Culture section, here to talk all things Cardiff culture - check it out!

But here is what I want to ask of you: make Gair Rhydd yours! Write for us, tip us off, tell us what we are missing, use us as the space to platform what matters to you!

Every single part of the paper you are reading is the product of students and their passion. If that inspires you, message us on Instagram, or email editor@gairrhydd.com.

Finally, I want to say thank you to our fantastic new editorial team, Staff Writers, and contributors. Without the hard work of these countless Gair Rhydders, this edition wouldn’t be what it is
