It’s a Wednesday, maybe the best day of the week, and the alarm rings at 9am.
Immediate thoughts consist of whether it’s worth skipping another lecture (it’s third year, should I be locking in at this point…?), followed by what I’m having for breakfast and then BAM. It’s a Wednesday, and hockey is calling my name.
Some people may say that hockey is my whole life, and whilst I could try and deny the allegations, it’s true.
I live and breathe it, so thank god I’m the president of the men’s hockey club. Hop in the shower, revise the game plan, pause thoughts on hockey (unfortunately) as I attend my Macroeconomics Analysis tutorial.
Some new faces here, or is it that I haven’t attended many? Either way, skip on home via Lidl for a cheeky food shop, remembering food is fuel, especially if the goal is an Angel’s step in YOLO.
Sat at the desk in my room, attempting to do some studying, contemplating that I will wrack up nine grand a year in debt (or thereabouts) to study here at Cardiff, and a wave of bliss rolls over me.
How could I forget? How could I let it slip my mind? How are thoughts ever of Macroeconomics more important than those of hockey? Some may say it’s an obsession, I just say it’s a way of life.
Back to Lidl where perhaps my love for Lidl rivals my love for hockey? What a silly thought. Back to Lidl to meet with my teammates at quarter to two for the drive up to Llanrumney.
A quick warm up before a prompt pushback for the Men’s Third Team at three o’clock against the University of Bath Men’s Fourth Team. Whilst many things may go in my favour, like coming to Cardiff for university, my amazing housemates, or getting YOLOWEEN tickets, this game did not.
To cut out some expletives, we lost nine to one. I’ve been known to blame the weather (and it was rather windy) or blame the ref: “Ref, it’s a penalty!” But we took our loss with dignity.
We can’t all win in life, and as a president, I have to set a good precedent, if you pardon the pun. But did I mention I got the assist on the goal?
Sucking up my pride, and for the greater good of the club, I fulfilled my president duties and umpired the next game.
Despite being partial rivals, I would even be happy to say if the Medics Men’s 1s Team won against the University of the West of England Men’s 2s. But they lost one-nil to UWE.
It’s safe to say it was not a winning Wednesday. However, the day is not over and the night is young.
A run home to freshen up and before I know it, I’m in social attire heading through the streets of Cathays to a teammate’s house.
Eight-thirty on the dot, the hockey club rolls into Foundry Social (RIP Gassy’s for those who remember) for one of the club’s renowned traditions, the table games.
And before anyone’s mind jumps to a preconceived idea of what a men’s hockey social may look like, it’s the game you would play as a child, naming all items belonging to a specific category.
Like different car brands, or how many different types of drinks I consumed as a hockey freshman.
After a few rounds of games, we bounced across the road into Misfits (big shout out for our sponsorship, we love you Misfits!).
I threw some questionable shapes in Misfits before heading over to YOLO at midnight. A big boo to the SU for staggering the queue and making my life hell as a president trying to organise timings for socials and ensuring newcomers are included.
And this is where my memory goes hazy. I hit the dance floor with VKs in hand, boogieing my troubles (a nine to one loss) away.
Then 3 a.m. rolls around and Robbie Williams’ voice blesses my ears for yet another week, before devouring a chicken and chips meal from T&A Kebabs and hitting the hay.
Another day in heaven, and I’ll do it all again next week.
A satirical story based on (some) facts.
