This edition of the newspaper looks a little different to what you're use to — I’m trying out a new format for the online editions we've got this year. Any feedback would be greatly apricated so send us a message on Instagram if you have any suggestions. Within this edition we've got some amazing articles from a few of our sections. I wanted to talk about the theme we tried to weave throughout this edition and that is “The Importance of Informing People’.
Newspapers were at the heart of how people consume media for many years but with the rise of online media our role has shrank. That doesn’t mean were going anywhere anytime soon as Gair Rhydd will always be committed to the student media experience at Cardiff. However, that means we have to adapt to reach more and more people — whether that is online, social media or new things within the paper like the crossword.
The people behind the articles are always important as you are reading the essence of their perception of the news. Having students as the journalists is such a key part of any student media experience. You are gaining a perspective from someone who lives and studies at the same place as you. Although you might not know them, these are underlying factors that bind you to the writing. Being informed by them on issues you both view as important only galvanises the student body more and unifies us around issues we all care about.
If you have something you want to share with your fellow students, reach out to me and I can point you in the right direction. We all come from unique places and have stories and views that can help inspire and enrich a debate. I would love for this paper, alongside the other sectors of student media, to be that place you can go to.
