This year was my first time at Varsity, despite being in third year. I remember last year the FOMO of seeing so many other people enjoying themselves and celebrating the success of our sports teams. I’m glad to say that this year I was able to join in with the crowds of slightly rowdy and certainly passionate students. The day was warm and relaxed, and I will remember it in years to come as a highlight of my University experience.
Myself and the deputy editors attended Tennis, later basketball and, after a brief stop at the Men’s Cricket, the Rugby at Arms Park. With so much to see, it was impossible to attend everything, luckily our team was able to be out and about, taking notes, getting pictures, collecting comments, and soaking up the vibes. From Llanrumney to Sport Wales, the Students’ Union and Talybont, our team was out and about mixing a spot of journalism into their days, thank you to everyone who has contributed.
Although my own knowledge of sport can be a bit patchy, the passion, skill and determination of our sports teams was obvious from the start of the day. The play was exciting to watch, made all the more enjoyable by opportunity for some light-hearted Swansea-bashing.
For myself, and for anyone else who was able to get a ticket, the Men’s Rugby at Arms Park was surely a highlight. Whilst in the first few minutes a Swansea victory seemed possible, as the game went on the Cardiff side took the lead, scoring dramatic try after dramatic try. Our victory was a further relief for myself as it made for an obvious choice of front page!
Welsh Varsity 2026 was a fantastic day for all, it saw record number of students all across the city once again showing everyone how amazing Team Cardiff is. To see everyone’s hard work and effort go into the day did not go amiss with another smoothly run day, with athletes and supporters on their best form. As well with the shield and cup both retaining their rightful place in Cardiff, showing everyones hard work paying off, for yet another incredible year of Welsh Varsity.
