Earlier this month, Cardiff University announced a plan to sell University Halls, a large residences site for over 650 students, to Cardiff Metropolitan University for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition comes as part of a broader re-shaping of Cardiff University’s estate, which has been characterised by a reduction in its overall portfolio in a move to downscale.

With student numbers falling at Cardiff University, the sale will mean that University Halls, known for its distance from campus, will welcome students from Cardiff Met from September 2027 onwards.

In an online statement, Cardiff University claimed that the sale will mean “more students in the capital will live within walking distance of where they study”. Rachael Langford, Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff Met, said, “This is a key strategic acquisition for the university and will allow us to further develop the experience for our students, particularly those whose studies are primarily based at our busy Cyncoed campus”.

She added that the transfer “forms part of our commitment to invest further in an excellent student experience”. Current tenants will not be affected by the changes, as most will have left by the time of the transfer.

However, in an email to staff, Debra Jones noted that “we have a small number of contracts with later, non-standard end dates and we will be reviewing those and liaising with those students further”. Jones’ email to staff made clear that Met intends to acquire University Halls “as an ongoing concern”.

Around 21 members of staff are expected to be transferred to Cardiff Met in accordance with Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (TUPE).

Cardiff University Estates is currently running a consultation with staff which began on 12th October and is expected to end on 22nd January.
