It’s getting colder and studying at university can be a big step-up in workload.
Therefore, it is great to have a study spot where you feel comfortable (and most importantly cosy), away from your accommodation and free from distraction.
Whether that is in a silent library or in a coffee shop, which is perfect for an autumnal drink and study session.
So, please indulge in this list of study spots perfect for you:
Libraries
A library wins the award for an ultimate lock-in spot, with little distraction and a great atmosphere; libraries can be fabulous spots for cracking on with some work with good access to WiFi.
The Science Library: One of my favourite libraries on campus includes the Science Library, especially the reading room. Picture what you think when you hear ‘library’ and the reading room is it.
The reading room (on the top floor) is incredibly aesthetic with its grand architecture and walls of bookshelves; so much that you feel as if you have entered Hogwarts!
As long as you sit in a spot with plugs and silence is how you find it best to study, I would definitely recommend it. Plus, if you’re feeling cheeky, the Taf is opposite for a post-study pint or snack (or pre if you need motivation).
Art & Social Sciences Library (ASSL): The ASSL is one of the most popular and open 24/7, so at some point you’ll certainly end up here past your bedtime.
This library is great not only for its opening times but also its size.
Whether you’re feeling more social or more like you need to lock-in, this library has a floor for you (and the plugs to accommodate you).
And, if you fancy a sweet treat as a reward, Lidl’s bakery is just next door, nothing more you could ask for.
Student Union/ Centre for Student Life
Not a fan of libraries or want a change in atmosphere? Try the SU or the CSL. These two are much more relaxed environments and much more sociable.
The SU is especially helpful for working as a group with its varied group seating which you can (sometimes) grab with ease.
I have found there can be issues with finding plugs so if you do visit, make sure your devices are fully charged.
While this can be a great place to study, these two locations can be a little more noisy at times, so just be aware of this beforehand.
Nonetheless, there are lots of food and drink places nearby such as Costa, Greggs, and the Taf, so you definitely won’t go without.
Coffee Shops
Want a venture off campus? Fancying a bit of eavesdropping whilst you study?
Then coffee shops are definitely for you, so here are some I would recommend: Black Sheep Coffee: A favourite among JOMEC students like myself.
Black Sheep offers lots of plugs, free WiFi (although it can be dodgy at times), and a 20% student discount!
They also do great pastries and drinks, and is perfect for if you want to live your ‘performative’ uni lifestyle with a matcha. It is overall a great place to go if you’re in the city and desperately need a study session.
Hoffi Coffi & Rhostio: These are two great options that offer closer alternatives to coffee shops in the city, especially if you’re living in the Talybont direction or for those in Cathays.
They have lots of choice and have been strongly recommended by second years (who are much more experienced than me).
As long as you’re able to focus with noise and win the fight for the plug sockets, these locations are certainly for you.
