Starting at Cardiff and thinking about joining a sport team? With so many clubs and leagues on offer, it’s easy to feel a bit lost. This guide breaks down the two main ways to get involved: BUCS and IMG, so you can find the right fit.
BUCS stands for British Universities & Colleges Sport, the competition that pits universities across England, Scotland, and Wales against each other every week. The elite national leagues sit at the top, with regional leagues filling out the pyramid below.
Cardiff competes right at the summit. Our rugby first team plays in BUCS Super Rugby, the highest level of university rugby in the country, and recently got the better of Cardiff Met in the Cardiff Clash.
There are 72 sports clubs on offer, with every sport you can imagine. 37 of them are BUCS- affiliated and most field several teams, so there is a chance for everyone. Last season Cardiff finished 10th in the national BUCS standings with 3,018 points, putting us firmly among the best sporting universities in Britain.
Fixtures are mostly on Wednesdays, with sports such as Futsal, Gaelic Football, and Indoor Cricket playing at weekends. If you want weekly, high-level competition against other universities, BUCS is it.
Intramural Games (IMG) is billed as recreational, but it gets competitive. Open to students and staff, IMG runs Netball, 7-a-side Football, and 11-a-side Football. Teams come from independent and school-affiliated societies, so you’re spoiled for choice.
Every Wednesday the Talybont Training Village courts (indoor and outdoor) host IMG Netball. The season splits into two phases: one a semester, across six fiercely contested leagues. Last year, the Law Society A team took the Super League crown.
Also played in two phases, 7-a-side rewards success. Hosted at the Talybont 3g astro pitch, win and you move up to a tougher bracket. Phase 2 features three leagues of nine teams — all society and school sides. 2025/26 champions ISOC (Islamic Society) FC will be out to defend their title.
The 11-a-side game is just as competitive, with five leagues of five teams. This is played on the Pontcanna Fields, run by the local Cardiff council. The best sides from phase 1 earn a spot in the top bracket, and phase 2 mirrors the English football pyramid: Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, and National League. Reigning champions of the Premier League, CPD Gym Gym, are the team to beat.
Want to represent Cardiff against the best in Britain? Try out in BUCS. Fancy playing alongside your coursemates or society friends while still chasing silverware? IMG is calling.
