Yesterday, the Founder of Freedom Watch GB was drowned out by chants of “Refugees are welcome here!” outside Cardiff Students’ Union.

In his tour of university campuses, Mr Toms challenges students to “prove [him] wrong”, claiming that “mass migration is destroying Britain" yesterday in Cardiff. Toms spoke from a gazebo, with a dedicated film and social media crew in a format popularised by the American right.

Tom's arguments, such as “a British passport doesn’t make you British”, have drawn a strong reaction from campaign groups across Britain, including from Cardiff’s own Time To Act and Stand Up To Racism Cardiff, who came in force.

Within a short time of Mr Toms setting up, his gazebo was surrounded by around 100 passionate students. While Mr Toms originally tried to carry on his “debate”, he eventually gave up as it became clear that his antagonism was simply not going to pierce through the chants of passion and community spirit from Cardiff students.

With protestors from a broad cross-section of campus arriving, the Students’ Union was quick to make clear that “These groups are neither affiliated to the Students’ Union, nor the University”. The Union says that Toms set up outside the Union building, but not within its premises, meaning that they had “no ability to prevent it.”

Lizzie McLaughlin (Vice President Undergraduate Students) told Gair Rhydd:

“We are proud of our students who rejected this rhetoric and projected their own voices, making it clear that we welcome all students of all backgrounds.”

Echoing Lizzie’s comments, Manala Aggour (Vice President Societies and Communities) stated:

“If you intend to spread hate, do not expect a warm welcome here. As demonstrated at today’s counter-protest, our members are proud to defend a multi-cultural Wales - and we are proud to defend them.”

Police officers were seen taking photographs and videos of protestors, which they say is standard procedure “to gather intelligence and evidence”.

Over time, as student chants grew louder, Mr Toms and his crew slowly gave up on their original plan and took down the gazebo. Determined to feel he got something from his travel to Cardiff, Mr Toms then turned to jeer the crowd for his cameras before leaving.

Toms drew an even more visceral reaction in Bristol, where around 100 student activists and over 250 onlookers gathered the day before in what became a heated exchange. Montgomery Toms argues that he sets up events like this to “deliver the truth”. His day at Bristol culminated with 15 police officers needing to separate Toms from the protest.

The cherry on top? Toms doesn’t hide the fact that he works for Restore Britain, the very party that advertises ‘mass deportations’ as their flagship policy.

Today, Cardiff students made their views on the far right clear. Cardiff is a student city that welcomes refugees. Cardiff will not resign itself to a politics based on hatred. It will not tolerate bigotry. It will not tolerate division.
